advances in technology are crucial if China is to meets its LED goals

Ben Lin, senior analyst at international LED consultancy LEDinside in Shenzhen, said they may include some listed companies as well as unlisted players such as Shenzhen Spark Optoelectronics S&T Co, Shenzhen Collection Enterprises Co and French-invested Zhongshan Juneng Hi-tech Optoelectronics & Lighting Co.

Chinese LED makers currently rely heavily on foreign companies for chips, which account for half of the production cost of the lights. Bringing that technology back home would help reduce costs. Lower costs and advances in technology are crucial if China is to meets its LED goals.

Reflecting a global trend, the Chinese LED high bay light market will likely see a compound annual growth rate of over 40 percent through 2016, making up 46 percent of the country's overall general lighting industry, the McKinsey report said.

Next week at Strategies in Light, the premier conference and exhibition for solid-state lighting (SSL), emerging fabless company, Ikon Semiconductor, will debut its digital controller Integrated Circuit (IC) technology for the dimmable LED retrofit market. The new technology is designed to meet cost and performance standards for today’s LED lighting products, while also enabling greater design simplicity for bulb manufacturers and OEMs. Central to the IC’s value is an innovative digital architecture that eliminates costly components – a benefit that reduces the form factor and improves reliability.

the white sands under tropical palm tree

The paradisiacal beaches of Playa del Carmen promise their own picture-perfect sunsets, complete with surf breaking on the white sands under tropical palm trees, but the same effect can now be enjoyed by the hordes of hungry tourists now flocking to this chic hot spot, when they dine at local restaurant La Penita de Jaltemba, basking in the warm sunset glow of the MR16 2200K LED lamp, created through the fruitful pioneering teamwork of ALT and Cree.

According to Professor Wasilewski, “MBE technology is rich in its application across several fields of study that we are focusing on here at WIN and IQC. After thorough evaluation, we thought the GEN10 was the best choice due to its flexible cluster architecture, system design details, full automation and relatively small footprint. It ideally fits our needs across many research frontiers. Also, given the importance of effusion cells to our research, we thought Veeco would be a great choice given their expertise and our history with their cells.”

Jim Northup, Vice President, General Manager of Veeco’s MBE Operations, commented, “Our team is very excited that the University of Waterloo has selected the GEN10 as its first piece of equipment to be installed at the new Quantum-Nano Center. It’s a great example of how Veeco’s state of the art MBE technology continues to remain at the forefront of broad based research around the world.”

the technology will also provide illumination for homes

Another significant market for sapphire is Silicon-on-Sapphire (SoS) Radio Frequency Integrated Circuits (RFICs). SoS RFIC chips deliver high RF performance with low power consumption, a small form factor, and significantly reduced crosstalk in antenna applications that are pervasive in smart phones and other consumer devices.

British scientists are working on tiny LED lights that could deliver Wi-Fi-like internet communications, while simultaneously displaying information. At the same time, the technology will also provide illumination for homes, offices and a whole host of other locations.

Over the next four years, with Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) funding, a consortium of UK universities LED high bay light by the University of Strathclyde will be developing this innovative technology to help unleash the full potential of 'Li-Fi'—the transmission of internet communications using visible light rather than the radio waves and microwaves currently in use.

Although the potential possibilities offered by Li-Fi are already being explored all over the world, the EPSRC-funded consortium is pursuing a distinctive vision that could deliver enormous benefits, the scientists promise: Underpinning Li-Fi is the use of LEDs, a rapidly spreading lighting technology which is expected to become dominant over the next 20 years. Imperceptibly, LEDs flicker on and off thousands of times a second. By altering the length of the flickers, it is possible to send digital information to specially adapted PCs and other electronic devices—making Li-Fi the digital equivalent of Morse Code. This would make the visible part of the electromagnetic spectrum available for internet communications, easing pressure on the increasingly crowded parts now used.

the continued growth of mobile smart devices

with the trend toward LED lighting replacing fluorescents in many buildings throughout the world, and the continued growth of mobile smart devices, LED lights that broadcast location data can help consumers interact within shopping malls, museums, trade shows, office buildings, factories and even airports and airplanes.

Each ByteLight-enabled LED high bay light broadcasts a proprietary signal that a smart device camera can detect. ByteLight’s platform delivers location information to easily update visitors with real-time maps and related location-based information without an active network connection. ByteLight administration features even enable building staff to analyse visitor traffic patterns and measure engagement.

Rather than creating an open standard, ByteLight’s firmware must be licensed to LED manufacturers, who then embed the ByteLight technology directly into the LED lamp as it is being manufactured. ByteLight recently licensed LED manufacturer, Solais, to produce ByteLight-enabled LED lighting for commercial and enterprise building solutions.

This application is really powerful, however, the standard needs to be adopted by smartphone operating systems or major app developers (who wants to use anything other than Google Maps?), but, in the mean-time you’ll be able to download a ByteLight app that can be used wherever ByteLight technology is used. Hopefully, this app will be of comparable quality to other, already established, smartphone mapping apps.

An additional benefit comes as the sealed units do not attract dust or insects

This new LED lamp can work with dry battery, and be used in portable sterilization device and nutrient solution sterilization. The technology has received basic patents from Japan and United States, and is scheduled to be commercial in 2015.

Local tri-state area residents, who see LED high bay light nightly, are invited to look up at the building and vote for their favorite shade of color via the ESB Facebook page. ESB fans around the world also have the opportunity to vote on ESB's Facebook. The final seven selected colors will be announced the week of January 21, 2013.

The Empire State Building unveiled its new state-of-the-art LED lighting system designed by Philips Color Kinetics. The new lighting system is unique to ESB and allows customized light capabilities from a palette of over 16 million colors in limitless combinations along with special effects such as ripples, sparkles, cross-fades and bursts.

An additional benefit comes as the sealed units do not attract dust or insects, making them the most hygienic option for any conveniencestore.  The lack of heat given off by the units also means that produce stays fresher for longer and chillers and air conditioning doesn’t need to work as hard, saving further energy usage.

where illumination of the space is only required when occupied

Lumix has developed a smart range of multi-functional LED high bay light with each product offering either basic, motion sensor, emergency pack, or emergency pack with sensor options. The motion sensor options include an adjustable detection range, adjustable trigger level and the ability to dim to 0 or 20% illumination when no one is present. In addition, the units can be interlinked which allows a group of lights to be triggered by one unit with a sensor. This is particularly useful for corridors and stairwells where illumination of the space is only required when occupied.

“This is the first time we have identified a supplier that offers a full family of lights with similar multi-functionality”, explained Managing Director, Simon Leggett. “Lumix represent the kind of dynamic, innovative and creative company that Light Planet are proud to develop relationships with”.

The Lumix range of products is targeted directly at the fluorescent replacement market and features 2D replacement bulkheads for internal, external and architectural environments; 1 and 2 tube replacement for the vapour proof, IP65 T8 fluorescents which are ideal for car parks; and a low bay linear fitting that compares to T5 for around 50% of the energy consumption.

the energy consumption of the sector could have a significant impact on electricity demand

Lighting is one of those facets of modern life that we rather take for granted, but it is a huge consumer of electricity and LED lights consume a fraction compared to traditional incandescent lights or even fluorescent lights, which are themselves capable of up to 75% savings in power over incandescent.

Lighting accounts for 19 percent of global electricity consumption, so changes that slash the energy consumption of the sector could have a significant impact on electricity demand.

One factor holding back earlier adoption has been price. Although LED lights can last up to 50 times longer than an incandescent bulb, upfront costs have been prohibitive, so far. As production capacity rapidly rises and the rare earth metals yttrium, europium and terbium have fallen in price, the cost of manufacture has come down, speeding uptake.

According to Tasman Metals, a mining company in the sector, LEDs present many advantages over both incandescent and compact fluorescent light sources, including lower energy consumption, longer life, improved robustness, smaller size, faster switching, and greater durability and reliability.

led Micron executives to narrow the focus on the development of LED technology

The Boise-based computer chip maker Micron Technology Inc. is scaling back on its plans to develop energy-efficient lighting technology, leading to the layoff of at least 30 workers.

Micron spokesman Dan Francisco confirmed the decision Wednesday in a story published by the Idaho Statesman. Francisco says increased competition in the LED market, a changing world economy and decision to focus on computer memory led Micron executives to narrow the focus on the development of LED technology.

The company started the LED light technology program in 2009 with the help of $5 million in federal economic stimulus cash. The division had 170 employees, and after the job layoffs 30 workers will remain with the program while another 110 have already taken other jobs with Micron.

Which should lead to cheaper prices in the future

The city already has employed LED lights downtown with the development of N.C. Veterans Park, which opened last year. The new lights are up in the parking lot and along Bragg Boulevard next to the Airborne & Special Operations Museum. And the Amtrak station parking lot has recently converted to LED high bay light with a federal grant, said Craig Hampton, the city's special projects director.

While LED fixtures are still more than three times the cost of purchasing a sodium-vapor bulb, the price of $400 for one LED fixture has dropped 20 percent in just the past year since PWC began planning the pilot study, said Carolyn Justice-Hinson, the utility's main spokeswoman. And more manufacturers are joining in the craze, which should lead to cheaper prices in the future, she said.

PWC has another motive for the pilot study: The General Assembly in 2007 passed a law requiring public utilities to start investing in renewable energy and power-saving measures such as LED lights.

In most cases, PWC will use the same poles and replace the bulbs and fixtures hanging over the roadways. But PWC will use the study to decide whether cul-de-sacs, for instance, need brighter LED bulbs than those that will go up on blocks of streets.

blue lights at optimized ratios for plant growth

SDK has developed the new cultivation method jointly with Professor Masayoshi Shigyo, Faculty of Agriculture, Yamaguchi University. Compared with conventional LED-based plant growth facilities, the new method shortens shipment cycles and increases the amount of harvest through the irradiation of red and blue lights at optimized ratios for plant growth, using LED chips produced by SDK.

Kawauchi Village has decided to adopt the new cultivation method (the Shigyo method) and SDK's LED chips at its new plant growth facility, recognizing the advantages of the method. SDK has decided to license the LED high bay light technology for free to assist the village's reconstruction efforts.

The village, located at the center of Abukuma Highlands, is known for its rich rice crop. As the village is within the 30-km radius of the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Station, however, part of the village was designated as a "cautionary area" and the rest as an "evacuation-prepared area in case of emergency" after the nuclear accident following the Great East Japan Earthquake. The "evacuation-prepared area" designation has already been lifted, and some of the residents have started returning to the village. Nevertheless, it is not easy to restore the farmland, and employment opportunities in the village are not yet sufficient.

As part of its efforts to restore agriculture and ensure employment opportunities, Kawauchi Village decided to build a hydroponic plant growth facility that uses safe groundwater and artificial light. The facility, to be operated as a totally closed system, will ensure food safety, and employ 25 workers. A ground-breaking ceremony was held on October 20, and the facility will start producing leaf lettuce and herbs in April 2013.

LED bollards were added to the lighting plan

one of North America’s most experienced and knowledgeable manufacturers of outdoor lighting, has provided Sacred Heart Academy of Hempstead, NY with LED luminaires and bollards for its entire campus. In total, 35 single and multi-head poles and 50 bollards provide Sacred Heart students, families, and faculty with a lighting package that improves safety, saves energy, reduces maintenance, and helps beautify the school’s grounds.

Working in conjunction with school personnel and Cameron Engineering of Woodbury, NY, Sentry devised a comprehensive lighting plan for several types of areas including the driveway, parking area LED high bay light, student drop-off area, and various pathways. To provide suitable light levels and uniformity, single-head, double-head, and triple head poles were used primarily for the large, open spaces. For pathways, crosswalks and other small spaces, LED bollards were added to the lighting plan.

To provide safety in areas with high pedestrian traffic, matching non illuminated bollards augmented the use of LED bollards. Sentry also developed a unique bollard base so that several non illuminated bollards could easily be removed by maintenance personnel during times of special events or to allow emergency vehicles access to certain parts of the grounds. The specified LED linear high bay light are Sentry’s famed Battery Park series.  Each is configured with a Zhaga-compliant Philips Fortimo light enginethat consumes a scant 58 watts of power, but emits 6000 lumens. Sentry’s SPR reflector system with Backlight Reduction asymmetrically distributes comfortable, pleasing, indirect light.  The Backlight Reduction feature reduces house side illumination by approximately 35% while directing additional light towards the street side of the luminaire. As Sacred Heart is located amid a residential community, Backlight Reduction helps minimize any possible light trespass.

The specified bollards utilize Sentry’s Washington style decorative design. LED versions are configured with Xicato light engines that consume only 14 watts of energy. Sentry’s SPR conical reflector provides a symmetric Type V distribution to uniformly illuminate the various pathways and crosswalks.

resource efficient green economy are to be realized

Increasing numbers of countries are now achieving major financial savings, generating green jobs, and seeing reductions in mercury, sulphur dioxide, and other pollutants from power stations, through a switch to efficient lighting. Ambitious policies and partnerships must be seized if the social, economic, and environmental benefits of a transition to a low-carbon, resource efficient green economy are to be realized.

Viper Networks, Inc. has made success on both LED lighting pilot programs with Sri Lanka's Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources; and with Colombo city officials representing the largest metropolitan area in Sri Lanka.

While the Company seeks to install indoor lighting and street lights for all of Sri Lanka's 18 existing harbors and 11 new harbors under construction, the anticipated agreement (upon pilot project completion) for approximately 100 to 200 indoor lights and street lights per location represent the much smaller of the two pilot programs.

The Company's priority to establish significantly increased manufacturing capacity with Apollo Metro reflects in part, Viper Networks targeting much larger LED Street Light municipality clients for economically fast growing countries with major cities abroad, as well as a domestic focus on securing agreements with certain municipalities with multiple cities and towns within one or more U.S. counties for potential large scale LED street light replacement business.
