Optoma has introduced its first micro projector using DLP technology from Texas Instruments (TI), with LEDs as the backlight source. The device is able to project a 20-inch diagonal image from a distance of 50cm. This product is expected to start shipping in October. The company now supplies a wide range of auto lights and accessories, including strobe lights, side lights, stop lights, pole lights, auto horns, decorative flashers and led high bay light, fine-tuning parts, high power LED stop lamps, auto LED lights, frames, highway flashers, auto parts, LED race lamps, LED candlelight lamps and related accessories. Also, the company’s seasoned R&D capability enables it to handle orders on an original equipment manufacturing (OEM) or original design manufacturing (ODM) basis. Devoted to offering considerate customer services and the best product quality, the company has successfully seen its products gain great popularity in countries of North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

It’s reported that the energy saving trend has led Aixtron's sales to record heights in Q4/2007. Now the manufacturer of LED production equipment sees a "digestion phase" during which the semiconductor market will absorb the production capacity built up over the past quarters. The breakthrough of LED in general lighting applications will not come before the years 2012/2013, predicts Aixtron investor relations manager Guido Pickert.Pickert explained that the market currently is driven by advancements in LED backlighting applications. LEDs are replacing Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps (CCFL) as the light source in laptop computers, desktop monitors and TV sets. Manufacturers such Apple Computer, Sony and Philips recently have introduced products with LED backlights. While in laptop computers LED shine with their low energy consumption, in TV sets they favorably compete with conventional backlight solutions through a much higher contrast ratio of up to 2 million to one.

Pickert called the switch to LED backlighting a "no-brainer", in particular for laptop computer applications. However, the question is how fast the market penetration will rise. In Taiwan, where most of Aixtron's customers are located, the expectations certainly were very high. But this has to be seen a little bit more realistic, he indicated.Against the background of the led flood light semiconductor industry downturn, Pickert's expectations for rapid growth are only moderate. When in Q4/2007 they announced record sales, Pickert already pointed out that the market will need a 'digestion phase'. Now, he said. "Nobody knows how deep the downturn will be and how long it will last.

LED technology by building the diodes on low cost silicon wafers

Recently, Intellectual Property Bank Corp (IPB) has announced its "Applicant Score Rankings" based on the company's proprietary benchmarks for technical competitiveness of manufacturers engaged in the LED lighting system business. According to IPB, a company that provides consulting related to intellectual property, Nichia Corp is the top manufacturer on a basis of competitive technology in the LED lighting system area.IPB said the "Applicant Score" evaluates the patent potential of the applicants based on the quality and quantity of the patents they have applied for led flood light. The rankings targeted companies, universities, research institutes and individuals that have filed applications related to LED lighting technologies with Japan's Patent Office. IPB's analyses are based on publicly disclosed patent bulletins issued during the period from January 1993 to February 2008.

The technique overcomes prohibitive costs of current LED technology by building the diodes on low cost silicon wafers, instead of currently-used sapphire.LEDs are said to be four times more efficient than conventional incandescent lights, more environmentally friendly than compact fluorescent lights, and have a far longer lifespan of up to 15 years.According to Purdue University researchers who developed the technique, LED technology could cut electricity consumption by 10 percent if widely adopted. Timothy D. Sands, the Basil S. Turner Professor of Materials Engineering and Electrical and Computer Engineering said "If you replaced existing lighting with solid-state lighting ... it could reduce the amount of energy we consume for lighting by about one-third."

Sands described currently-used incandescent bulbs as heaters, explaining that they convert only 10 percent of electricity into light, and the rest into heat. In comparison, led high bay light designed to emit white light operate at efficiencies ranging from 47 to 64 percent, but cost around 20 times more than conventional incandescent and compact fluorescent light bulbs.Current LEDs are built on sapphire and comprise of a light-emitting material called gallium nitride and a costly mirror-like collector to reflect light that ordinarily would be lost.Researchers expect the use of silicon to enable the industry to "scale up" the process, or manufacture many devices on large wafers of silicon, which is not possible using sapphire. Sands said Producing many devices on a single wafer reduces the cost.

the city wants businesses to be welcomed

Sol is a world leader in the development and distribution of Solar LED lighting. Sol is the oldest manufacturer focused on outdoor solar lighting systems with over 18,000 systems installed in more than 50 countries on six continents. Sol has introduced innovative, reliable and cost-effective solar lighting systems for over 15 years that provide unsurpassed levels of illumination and reliability. Sol develops, manufactures and markets commercial/industrial-grade solar powered and energy efficient lighting systems for a wide range of lighting applications including area and security, street and roadways, sign and billboards and transit and shelter lighting.

City Planner, Erik Enyart, had brought a proposal to the council earlier at which time the mayor said there should be no limiting of the lights when the city wants businesses to be welcomed.Enyart had to return to the council, however, because a change had to be made in the current ordinance to allow for the LED lights.Enyart said the lights could be accepted with special exception in the ordinance and suggested that there be standards set for the use of the lights for signage. He said he followed Tulsa's ordinance in the rewrite, and that Tulsa said their ordinance is working very well.Councilor Dennis Loudermilk said, "We really need to climb inside this to see what we are limiting." He said those who oppose such lights refer to the flashing lights that are distracting to drivers.

Is there any way to fix the ordinance so that it does not restrict businesses?" as the Honorable Mayor, Ray Bowen.Enyart said he could pull the proposed standards from the ordinance he was submitting for approval. If someone wanted to put a sign up, would they have to go through the Board of Adjustment?" Councilor Steve Todoroff asked.Bowen asked if it would go back to the planning commission and then to the council for final approval.City Attorney Phil Frazier said if the prohibitions were removed from the proposed ordinance that would not be necessary.

"We don't want to hinder someone trying to do business here," said Todoroff.City Manager Micky Webb said some kind of action needed to be taken because of the wording presently. The prohibitive language needed to be removed.Frazier added that if there should be annoying lights, flashing lights put up, they could be handled with a nuisance ordinance. It was decided to take all prohibitive wording out of the ordinance to allow open use of LED lights for advertising.

it was the bright areas that really struck me

In the demo, the blacks were indeed very dark (the companies claim infinite contrast, just like that Pioneer set from CES), but it was the bright areas that really struck me. In chase footage from The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, headlights in the picture really popped and were almost hard to look at, as if they were, well, real headlights. One downside the company engineers confessed to is that the LED tech can only do 92% of TV-standard color, though I would never have known if they hadn't pointed it out. The other downside is power consumption, with the demo unit sucking up as much as 2 kilowatts at peak brightness (that's as much as your dryer), but keep in mind it's a prototype.

On April 4, 2008, Avago Technologies today announced its first 1-Watt (1W) high power Moonstone(TM) LED emitter for use in a variety of architectural, garden and decorative lighting applications. Available in one of the industry's thinnest packages, Avago's ASMT-Mx00 is an energy efficient LED emitter that's encapsulated in a heat and UV resistant silicone compound for high reliability and long life. This competitively priced LED emitter, which is available in Amber and Red colors, provides designers of solid-state lighting applications with an easy-to-use power LED that has a wide viewing angle radiation pattern, and superior heat dissipation. Avago is a leading supplier of analog interface components for communications, industrial and consumer applications.

The ASMT-Mx00 1W Moonstone power LED series has been designed to dissipate heat more efficiently to provide superior thermal management and consistent light output. The low-profile design (3.3 mm H) of the 1W LED package is ideal for a variety of lighting applications where height is a constraint. Moreover, the high brightness output of Avago's ASMT-Mx00 LED series provide lighting designers with ease of assembly, and greater flexibility in designing the size, shape and appearance of lighting assemblies.

there is not only more light

There is one point on which all the experts in the lighting industry agree: LEDs will continue to advance, and supplement conventional lights by delivering a wide range of additional functions. Those additional functions are made possible by the special features of LEDs, such as quick and easy colour changing and mood settings which are barely possible – if at all – using other forms of lighting. In the view of light designer Michael Podgorschek, co-proprietor of podpod design, the opportunities opened up by such features will in future mean that there is not only more light, but also more awareness of light.

They are already using LED backlight module on their laptop or LCD panel for laptop, including Sony, Sharp, Toshiba, Fujitsu, TMDisplay, Samsung Electronics, and Taiwanese LCD manufacturers, CMO, AUO, and ASUS…etc.

Samsung are going to increase their ratio to approximately 50% using LED back light module, this action is definitely a positive stimulant of LED backlight module’s market.
