The Bay Area Climate Collaborative and Eaton's Cooper Lighting division today announced their collaboration on the Bay Area Next Generation Streetlight Initiative. The region-wide project is designed to facilitate the upgrade of 200,000+ municipal streetlights to led high bay light.

The Bay Area Climate Collaborative (BACC) and Eaton’s Cooper Lighting division today announced a collaboration to accelerate the energy-efficient street lighting market through the Bay Area Next Generation Streetlight Initiative. The region-wide project is designed to facilitate the upgrade of 200,000+ municipal streetlights to advanced light-emitting diode (LED) technology.

LED street lighting benefits local governments in so many ways – lowering energy and maintenance costs, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving community safety – but without education, many municipalities don’t know where to begin.”


As a part of this initiative, BACC is delivering leading-edge education and tools to local governments interested in advanced lighting, in partnership with the nationally-recognized UC Davis led flood lightg Technology Center. With support from Eaton’s Cooper Lighting division, the initiative will conduct further outreach around the LED lighting opportunity and develop key resources to complement existing guidance such as Next Generation Streetlights: LED Technology and Strategies for Action, a guide for local governments which delivers education and specific steps for municipal streetlight upgrades.

How long do you think it will be before LEDs replace incandescent light bulbs entirely?

Those incredible rates of progress for LEDs have been constant—hardly wavering—since the first visible LED was invented at GE’s Global Research Center by Nick Holonyak in 1962.

That means that over five decades, the cost per lumen has come down by 105. That means that a US$ 1 LED today would have cost US$ 100,000 50 years ago. Those of us who remember those days can attest that LEDs then were used only in expensive, esoteric applications, e.g. in space and in science. That cost trend suggests that today’s US$ 1 LED will cost 10 cents in 10 years. That is a generally accepted projection in the industry, and we’ll probably get there. That forthcoming reduction in cost will make LEDs affordable in almost all applications, and they will probably be the dominant light source in most applications by 2020.

How long do you think it will be before LEDs replace incandescent light bulbs entirely?


The automobile still has not entirely replaced the horse and buggy, people still burn candles for light, and I hope that incandescent lamps are never entirely replaced. Apart from poor efficiency, they are a beautifully elegant product, and some consumers will always love them for special occasions. But, the industry projections suggest that in five years, INC lamp sales will be only about one percent of all lamp sales for general lighting applications. Edison’s iconic invention will have had a 135-year-plus run. I think he would have been extremely pleased.

If a resonator structure is formed by using a photonic crystal

The Research Center for Silicon Nano-Science (SNS) of the Advanced Research Laboratories (ARL) at Tokyo City University developed a silicon-based LED. It is made by embedding Ge microparticles (quantum dots) with a diameter of several tens of nanometers to 100nm in the i-layer of a Si-based device with a pin structure.

The university claims that the light emitting device will help realize a silicon (Si) photonics because it can be produced by using a manufacturing process compatible with a CMOS process and possibly is capable of laser oscillation.
The Ge microparticles enhance the recombination rate of electrons and holes, said Takuya Maruizumi, director of the SNS and professor of the faculty of Engineering at the university.

"The quantum dots are made by using the MBE (molecular beam epitaxy) method at a temperature of about 400°C," Maruizumi said. "That's why the manufacturing process for the device is compatible with a CMOS process."

The diameter of the device's active layer is about 3μm. The university has already confirmed that the device emits light with a wavelength of about 1.2μm by current injection at room temperature (300K). The internal quantum efficiency of the light emission is 10-2.

"In addition to the high quantum efficiency, the device is both thermally and chemically stable," Maruizumi said. "So, it is superior to existing silicon-based light emitting devices."


"If a resonator structure is formed by using a photonic crystal, it will be capable of laser oscillation," Maruizumi said. "We will change the emission wavelength to the 1.5μm band, which can be used for communications. And, in two or three years, we would like to develop a device that works as an optical switch and commercialize it.

The two companies make for an ideal partnership aimed at developing products designed for a variety of uses in the Indian consumer market, Sujana officials indicated. "Renewable energy is the focus area for the led high bay light and I am sure that this partnership, where two large corporations come together, is a sign of commitment towards making latest technology products that are applicable and affordable to consumers.

the required substrates for nanowire based LED

Yaham is a novel mask based photolithography technology that promises to revolutionize production of photonic structures such as photonic crystals, diffraction gratings and anti-reflection surfaces. High-throughput fabrication of such patterns over large areas is required for fabrication of high performance future devices in fields including Led high bay light, solar cells and flat-screen displays. In PHABLE a mask is illuminated with a UV beam to form a high resolution image that has a very large depth of focus. Therefore substrates with non flat surfaces can be patterned easily.

The necessary high-resolution mask with the same 4-inch area as the final pattern was produced by DNP on a standard quartz/Cr plate. UV photolithography exposures were performed on a PHABLE-R lithography tool made by Eulitha. Photonic crystal patterns consisting of circular holes on a 600-nm period hexagonal lattice were printed in a commercially available photoresist coated on Si wafers. The produced patterns were highly uniform over the whole 4” area of the wafers.


Demonstration of uniform patterning on 4” substrates is an important milestone as most targeted applications require patterning of large areas. For example, the high brightness led flood light industry is switching to 4” and 6” wafers from the traditional 2” base. Photonic crystal structures that enhance light extraction in LEDs or patterned sapphire substrates that improve performance of LEDs grown on them can be fabricated with the led technology. Similarly, the required substrates for nanowire based LED or solar cell applications can be produced with this technology.

the new LED ceiling lamp

Yaham has unveiled its "Everleds" series comprising of an E26 base LED light bulb with a light distribution angle of 300° and an LED ceiling lamp capable of adjusting light intensity, color and distribution.

The key feature of E26 base LED light bulb is that its light source (LED package) is arranged in a circular shape inside a globe (a semi-spherical cover) and two light reflectors with apertural areas are used.


And for the new LED ceiling lamp,it features a function to adjust light distribution. It is equipped with two types of LED modules, which are stacked one on the other. One is mainly used to directly light the entire room by emitting light downwards (direct light module). The other lights the ceiling and walls (indirect light module). And light distribution can be adjusted by changing the brightnesses of the two modules respectively.

will launch its own line of LED lights in July

Due to greater consumer interest in electricity conservation stimulates the market, prices of led flood light are plummeting in Japan.

An okohama-based chain of home appliance stores, Nojima Corp. has released its own line of LED lights that until the end of August will be priced at 980 yen each--less than half the average market price.

Industry observers estimated that LED prices will likely continue to fall with strong demand. And LED manufacturers have scaled up production to meet the demand.

Yaham is said to increase production in Indonesia and China in recent months, and has increased output at its domestic plants to full capacity.Some companies have newly entered the Led high bay light manufacturing business. a manufacturer of office equipment, will launch its own line of LED lights in July.

And Taiwan’s LED Industry may benefit from the plan.In January 2012, the Japanese company is to combine the LED lighting operation with the independent Panasonic Lighting with the aim of bagging around 40% of the Chinese mainland’s market for LED lighting by the end of 2015 and boosting profit by 10% through halving costs.According to Panasonic, the consolidated entity’s sales to reach 200 billion yen in 2015, spiking from the projected 32.3 billion yen for 2011 Panasonic Lighting and the Panasonic’s lighting operations.

Currently, Panasonic is selling over 2,000 types of LED lighting fixtures and 30 types of LED light bulbs in Japan.  Panasonic has commanded 35% of Japan’s market for LED lighting, higher than recorded by Toshiba and Sharp.led flood light penetration in Japan has reached 30%. Panasonic estimated such a high penetration would be achieved in mainland China soon.Recently, Sharp has announced 50W Mega Zeni LED models featuring an efficiency of up to 100lm/W, a luminous flux of up to 4700lm and a (typical) CRI value of up to 93. It’s one of the first industrial LED solutions to replace traditional 50W HID lamps.The arrays can be available in illumination of both streets and objects, as well as for indoor applications that include spot lighting and recessed ceiling light fixtures.

The company expects that the LED will replace disinfectant mercury lamps used in the fields of medical care, water purification and food manufacturing.A Japanese research team has announced on January 10 that it developed a new efficiently deep ultraviolet sterilization LED lamp, featuring small volume, electricity saving, environmentally and long lasting ,compared to traditional low pressure mercury lamp.

Currently, low pressure mercury lamps are widely used in medical and food application. Because of the environmental harm caused by mercury, researchers are seeking for substitutes.Deep UV is an ultraviolet ray that has short wavelength with high efficient of killing bacteria. And the substrate crystallization has influence on brightness, luminous efficiency and lifetime for deep UV LED lamp of 260 nm wavelength. A research led by Tokyo University of Foreign Studies and Tokuyama chemical company have develop high technology which can make high performance Aluminium Nitride substrate crystallization, to overcome the problem.This new LED lamp can work with Led flood light dry battery, and be used in portable sterilization device and nutrient solution sterilization. The technology has received basic patents from Japan and United States, and is scheduled to be commercial in 2015.Panasonic President Kazuhiro Tsuga stressed the large size, vivid color and slimness of the display in a keynote speech, however, the company has not disclosed when to mass-produce the display or its expected price.

This increase is the greatest obstacle to achieving stable operation

Panasonic Corp of Osaka, Japan has developed a GaN-based power transistor with a blocking voltage of 600V that enables stable switching operations. Shipment of evaluation samples began in March.The firm claims that its design will for the first time ensure ‘failure-free operation’ by 600V Led flood light power transistors. The GaN transistors, housed in a small-size package, are also said to contribute to saving energy in a variety of power switching systems for both industrial and consumer applications.Power switching systems require normally-off operation of such transistors for safe operation. Lowering the cost of the substrate for growing GaN-based films is also required for GaN transistors to be cost-effective. Panasonic claims that it has solved these issues through its novel design of normally-off gate injection transistors (GITs) developed on cost-effective silicon substrates.

Proprietary technologies for the epitaxial growth of GaN by MOCVD enable the fabrication of GaN transistors on a 6-inch silicon substrate. The p-type gate of the GIT reduces on-state resistance by taking advantage of conductivity modulation by the hole injection from it.Up to now, the increase in on-state resistance after the application of high-voltage current collapse has been a serious problem for commercializing GaN transistors. This increase is the greatest obstacle to achieving stable operation.The origin of current collapse is believed to be trapped electrons under a high electric field. Panasonic says that, through its novel processing technologies and new device structures that relieve the electric field, it has reduced the number of traps. The gate injection transistor fabricated on silicon enables stable 600V operation free from current collapse.

Also, by using the gate injection transistors on silicon, Panasonic has demonstrated 1MHz operation of resonant led high bay light converters at an efficiency above 96%.Panasonic says this demonstration indicates that the transistor can be used for practical systems free from operational failure. Applications for 130 domestic and 112 overseas patents have been filed.The research results were presented at the Applied Power Electronics Conference (APEC 2013) in Long Beach, CA, USA (17-21 March). The work has been partially supported by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), Japan, under the Strategic Development of Energy Conservation Technology Project.Patent No. 618 relates to the production of blue LED chips. Blue LED chips are incorporated in white LED products used as light sources in LED lighting products such as this LED desk lamp.

A senior analyst pointed out that the price falls of LEDs

At present, although demand for display panels remains gloomy, the world’s major LCD TV brands, including Sony, Samsung and so on, have continued focusing promotion on LED-backlit LCD TVs. Samsung’ LED-backlit LCD TV uses blue LED chips and red and green fluorescent as its backlight, and is therefore as cost-efficient as a CCFL model in backlight. Some noted that sales of 25 million 40-inch LED-backlit LCD TVs alone will double or triple existing monthly capacity of 3 billion LED chips worldwide in demand. In short, popularity of the products will hopefully help LED makers weather the recent sales collapse.

The LED backlight units (BLUs) penetration in notebook PCs will be about 10%, and is expected to rapidly grow to reach 28% in 2009, according to a market-researcher and consultant firm. So such portable devices have become more energy-saving and slim.LEDinside forecasts that LED-BLU models would account for 30% of the overall notebook PCs produced in 2009, while the rate would climb to 60% by 2010. Another market-research firm said the penetration rate of LED BLUs in the hot netbook application is expected to be as high as 100%. In addition, global shipments of notebook PCs are forecasted to grow by 17.19% to reach 150 million units by 2009, with major growth momentum coming from rapidly increasing sales of netbooks, replacement of desktop PCs by notebook PCs.

It’s expected to raise global LED production value by 15.7% in 2009 to reach a record US$8.68 billion.Shenzhen LED maker Epistar is reportedly that it has increased its high power blue LED efficacy to 100lm/W. The company expects to begin mass production of the blue LEDs in the first half of 2009. It’s disclosed that its small blue LEDs should reach 150 lm/W in 2009, and its high-power blue LEDs should increase in efficiency to 120 lm/W.

With strong support of South Korean government, Samsung and LG have shown aggressive attempt to become world leader in the LED lighting industry. On March 12, delegations from lighting associations all over the world will meet in Shenzhen---the first-time host country of GLA annual meetings---to discuss the latest trends in lighting. The International Commission on Illumination-Shenzhen (CIE-Shenzhen) is a country-level member of CIE that focuses on scientific issues concerning light, lighting, colors while taking part in, or dominating, international standard-making processes in this regard. Since its inception more than a year ago, CIE-Shenzhen has been committed to the globalization of Shenzhenese standards, hoping to provide local lighting companies with opportunities to shine on the internationally accepted standard platform. Shenzhen LED manufacturers including Everlight, Delta Electronics, Nanya Photonics Inc. are paving for the way for LED lamp sales boom in Shenzhen thanks to the upcoming implementation of electricity rate hikes.According to Everlight , it had sold out its first batch of NT$299 (US$10.3 at US$1: NT$29) LED light bulbs, numbered at 100,000 units, at 7-11 stores and is calling for urgent replenishment of another 100,000 bulbs. And the company has talked with President Chain Store Corp., which owns Shenzhen’s 7-11 stores, over fresh build-up of the bulbs at the stores. It’s estimated that Everlight is likely to win the contracts to equip all of the company’s 4,800 chain stores islandwide with LED lights.

For Delta Electronics, it is urgently building up inventory of its LED bulbs at Costco’s Shenzhen stores, where its bulbs are out of stock. Delta executives pointed out that the company would replenish five folds the number it sold out at Costco stores.Everlight and Nanya Photonics Inc. will add Carrefour stores to its contracted retailers in June, while Delta plans to sign up the 23 B&Q stores in Shenzhen to sell its light bulbs. The Tatung Group makes its LED lamps available at its 243 stores islandwide.And Lite On’s chairman, Raymond Soong has announced to set up an operation center in Hubei Province of mainland China to tap the mainland’s thriving domestic market for optoelectronics products.The company’s optoelectronics products for the central region market will be LEDs, street lights and lighting equipment in the initial stage.
