the capacity of LED manufacturers has been strategically increased

According to AIVtech chairman and CEO JinLin Guo, they launched production of LED-backlit LCD TVs in April 2010 and expect led high bay light TVs to contribute a sizable portion of their revenue in 2010.It’s said that they have already established relationships with many well-known European retailers and distributors and have obtained excellent feedback following their first order from Europea Trade in June."

Along above cooperation, the ODM contract between AIVtech, Europea Trade and its trading partner Q Media is for the manufacture of LCD TVs that employ LED backlighting, offering improved lifetime, brightness, and picture quality versus traditional fluorescent tube-backlit LCD TVs.Due to the scarcity of electronic components from upper stream, for production capacity entire LED industry has shrunk significantly. Also, many major international LED manufacturers have extended its delivery time to reflect to this emergency. As today, the lead time has been stretched out from 5 weeks to nearly 20 weeks. This bad situation swept the LED industry, which is in rapidly growing stage now. The serious impact does not only affect LED manufacturers, but also for distributors and trading companies who are facing huge financial penalty by postponing delivery schedule. The estimated amount of damage is more than several billions US dollars.

According to LED industry professionals, the chaos of electronic components shortage is expending to all relative businesses. The demand of LED is growing in a much faster pace than anyone expected. The entire market is disturbed by some distributors fighting for inventory. Since the end of 2009, the lack of electronic components led to price increase for metal raw material. Today LED industry also shares the panic for lacking of electronic components.

Based on the report published by LED professional media, LEDinside, although the capacity of LED manufacturers has been strategically increased, the shortage of blue jewels and other essential components is still enormous. As 2010 Q2, the price of components has doubled, and created a disaster to LED Linear high bay light. According to The Commercial Times, the most popular business newspaper in Taiwan, points out, besides the lack of LED chips, the shortage of electronic components is another critical reason for decreasing production. Furthermore, the demand of LED lighting is exceeds supply significantly. The severe shortage situation may lead to battle-for-product crisis, which create huge indirect impact to LED distributors.

the luminaire has reached the end of its service life

In the fourth quarter 2009 VPEC placed its order for multiple additional epitaxial growth reactors making it the single largest purchase of its kind for the company this year. The systems will be commissioned at the LED high bay lighting modern facility in Ping-Jen City, Taoyuan, Taiwan during the second and third quarters of 2010.

Vice President Neil Chen of VPEC said they have been using several AIX 2600 mass production MOCVD reactor systems for some years now. These have contributed greatly to their strong market share for optoelectronic and microwave epiwafers in Taiwan and worldwide.Lithonia says that the luminaire adjusts itself to eliminate the waste of over lighting. Also, the RTLED tracks its own operating hours and provides a visual indicator when the luminaire has reached the end of its service life.

Sunpu-Opto Semiconductor Ltd., a chinese LED fixture maker, is said to be a Cleveland's exclusive supplier of LED streetlights, traffic lights, and fluorescent tube replacements for nearly $10 million. In exchange the company agreed to relocate its North American headquarters to Cleveland, bringing 350 jobs. The City Council had to vote on the deal before the plan was approved. The Cleveland city council voted to delay the vote.

Many of members of the city council expressed concerns that the contract would not be given to a U.S.-based company. At the led high bay light city council meeting, some competitors noted that the lighting contract does not include competitive bidding, which is illegal under the current city charter.

the exercise of the Efficient Lights option

The IES transaction was completed on April 1, 2010, and the acquisition ownership and deal structure is similar to the structure the Company successfully utilized during the development of its EfficientLights business. Specifically, PowerSecure owns a two-thirds controlling interest in IES, which it acquired for cash proceeds of $4.4 million, and the IES management team owns the remaining one-third.

As a result, PowerSecure will include the financial results of IES on a consolidated basis in its financial statements, with adjustments to reduce PowerSecure’s net income for the minority interest portion of IES’s net income. Additionally, PowerSecure has the option to increase its ownership of IES to 100% by issuing PowerSecure common shares in exchange for the remaining one-third ownership interest in IES. The number of shares led high bay lights issued will be determined according to a formula based on PowerSecure’s Revenue and E.P.S. multiples, subject to a $10 million minimum value. The formula enables PowerSecure to acquire the remaining one-third interest on terms that are accretive to the Company’s E.P.S., while providing the IES management team with significant incentives for delivering profitable growth.

PowerSecure’s plan to exercise its option to increase its ownership of EfficientLights from 67% to 100% recognizes the highly successful results EfficientLights has posted to date, its strong backlog of orders for 2010, and its strong prospects for future growth. The transaction is expected to be accretive, and will involve the issuance of PowerSecure common shares in exchange for the remaining one-third minority interest in EfficientLights.

The number of shares to be issued in exchange for the remaining one-third interest will be 1,000,000 shares, provided that if the average closing price of the PowerSecure shares over the ten days preceding the transaction is less than $10.00 per share, then the number of shares delivered increases to maintain a transaction value of $10.0 million. After the exercise of the Efficient Lights option, EfficientLights will become a wholly-owned subsidiary and the Company will realize 100% of the EfficientLights profit, and will no longer reduce its net income for the amount attributable to the EfficientLights non-controlling interest.

White LEDs are well-known in various fields such as for LCD TV’s backlights or lighting and they require strict color control of the chromaticity range, especially in white LED linear high bay light for general lighting. Usually, the products need to be ranked and sorted according to the requirements before shipment, as the color always varies even if the products are produced in the same lot.

the semiconductor ecological light source

Per Roger Xiao, Asia Pacific Sales Director of Labsphere, a key reason the Institute selected Labsphere is, “Labsphere can commit to the customer that we can help them with customization of led high bay light software locally; also both parties can cooperate on building a SSL test and measurement platform that complies with international industry trends.

He is widely known for having developed the high-brightness blue LED based on GaN in 1993 while working for Nichia Corporation in Japan. In those days, developing a blue LED was considered impossible; only red and green LEDs had been available for the prior 20 years. Prof. Nakamura’s innovation allowed LED manufacturers to produce LEDs with three primary colors (red, green and blue) which could be mixed to express 16 million colors. Perhaps most importantly, the new technology was leveraged by the LED industry to begin commercial production of white LEDs, the semiconductor ecological light source.

In 2006, Nakamura won the Millennium Technology Prize of Finland, known as “the Nobel Prize in the technology field.” In 2004, he received the Benjamin Franklin Medal in the engineering segment, previously conferred upon Thomas Edison and Albert Einstein. In addition, he won The LED linear high bay light, given to only six scientists who have made an outstanding contribution to innovation of technology. In 2009, he received the Harvey Prize from the Technion in Israel.

What is really exciting is that more contracts are coming

One contract, with Woodstone Energy, is to upgrade the lighting at a large Fortune 50 manufacturing facility which will involve the retrofit and replacement of several thousand fixtures. The other two contracts are with large National Energy Services Companies ("ESCOs"); one to upgrade a community college and the other encompasses the upgrade of several county government buildings in the Southeast. In all three of these contracts, SRC has already audited the existing facilities, inventoried their lighting systems, proposed an improved design and will now procure the materials and oversee the installations. All three contracts are expected to be completed before the end of the year.

Rob Wilson, VP of SRC, commented, "We have established ourselves as a premier lighting design and retrofit firm. That combined with our positive relationship with Woodstone Energy and other ESCOs is clearly giving us a competitive advantage in securing these contracts."

What is really exciting is that more contracts are coming. Our engineered sales proposal pipeline continues to grow. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act stimulus money is beginning to trickle into the market and finding its way into lighting upgrade projects. As a result, we are receiving more requests for lighting upgrade proposals, most of which are coming from the public sector."

The LED-Downlight E8 offers highest quality white light, individually tuneable from warm white (2700 Kelvin) up to cool white (6500 Kelvin) thus allowing customised adjustments from "Morning Sun" to "Moonlight" and up to "Firelight" with a Colour Rendering Index (CRI) of 90. the same mounting locations and sizes

Optrex LED-backlit LCDs offer numerous advantages over conventional CCFL-backlit LCDs, including no warm-up time at low temperatures, lower power consumption, higher dimming ratios and, because they do not require high-voltage and high-frequency inverter circuits, significantly reduced electro-magnetic interference (EMI). And since LED backlights contain no mercury, these displays offer a more environmentally friendly option as well.

These displays also offer Optrex’s Natural Color Matrix (NCM) technology, a patented color transformation algorithm implemented in the hardware that provides real-time on-the-fly processing to precisely match the colors specified in a data source for exceptionally vivid color reproduction. Additional features include industrial standard CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) and LVDS (low-voltage differential signaling) interfaces for easy system development.

To ease the customer’s transition from CCFL-backlit displays, many of the new LED-backlit displays have the same mounting locations and sizes, saving on re-design and development costs. Each of the new panels are compatible with Optrex’s conventional CCFL-backlit TFT LCDs of the same size and resolution. The LED backlight rails are also field replaceable.

the signage industry and for the design of LED luminaires

In addition to existing partners from optics, thermal management and electronics (OTE), the LED Light for you (LLFY) network now includes system integrators. As the professional link between customers and OTE specialists, they are the contacts for customers and at the same time the coordinators for OTE specialists. Depending on the particular requirements, they bring experts together from all three sectors and if necessary offer support for end users at all stages up to the successful completion of their projects.

The concept of system integrators makes it easier for end users to use pioneering LED technology for various lighting solutions. As the “one face to the customer”, system integrators are the interface between the customer and the application. They focus specifically on customer requirements and bring together the appropriate partners from the optics, thermal management and electronics sectors to achieve the desired results. If requested to do so, they will also coordinate all the activities necessary for the successful completion of a project. “The network therefore offers a complete solution from a single source for various target groups such as architects, luminaire manufacturers and anyone interested in LED technology”, said Sebastian Lyschick, LLFY Project Manager at YAHAM Opto Semiconductors. “As a link between LED users and specialists from the OTE sectors, the system integrator can coordinate entire projects or various aspects of such projects.”

Specialist system integrators are available for a wide variety of lighting solutions, such as those for architectural applications, for applications in the signage industry and for the design of LED luminaires. In the architectural sector for example, it is lighting planners who take on this role. At present, there are 13 system integrators among around 80 partners currently active throughout the world.

the inflexibility of integrated LED luminaires now used in commercial and consumer settings

Beginning earlier this year, bulbs.com has carefully reviewed and added over 75 LED products to its broad line of over 3,500 lighting products to help businesses and consumers. "We continually strive to provide our customers with the most innovative and energy efficient lighting solutions, and we believe we have delivered again with the Cree LED lineup," Connors added.

YAHAM lighting with energy efficient long–lasting LEDs in directional applications such as recessed downlights, tracks, pendants and sconces becomes as easy as changing a standard light bulb early next year. A new technology “twist” from GE Consumer & Industrial—a small puck–shaped LED module that gives lighting designers and end–users the ability to easily upgrade LED lighting as technology advances—addresses the inflexibility of integrated LED luminaires now used in commercial and consumer settings.

The new module‘s one–of–a–kind ease of installation, a clockwise twist motion, contrasts sharply with current integrated LED luminaires and LED modules that are not easily replaceable because they require mechanical fasteners to couple the LED package to a heat sink, and a plug to make the electrical connection. With the new GE offering, the necessary thermal and electrical connections are made with a simple twist of the module into its socket.

Philips can provide a total solution including the LED floodlights, portable poles, solar panels and batteries, or just a set of floodlights. The system can also be used for non-sporting applications in locations without access to an electricity grid, such as evening classes in remote villages, safety and security, shops or outdoor markets, or emergency lighting for disaster situations.

The retrofit lamp is designed to be seen. Its performance is matched by a cool, streamlined styling. What makes the design of the LED candle innovative and different from other LEDs is the candle shape and its bright sparkling and ambient light effect. The LED candle is made specifically for chandeliers and kind-like luminaires. The HKDA Award originated in Hong Kong in 1975 and has become one of the biggest professional design competitions in the region. It is a comprehensive multidisciplinary award for professional design in the fields of graphic, product, spatial and new media.

This result demonstrates Cree’s continued focus on pushing the performance of its LEDs. Cree’s tests confirmed that the LED produced 197 lumens of light output and achieved 186 lumens per watt efficacy at a correlated color temperature of 4577K. The tests were conducted under standard LED test conditions at a drive current of 350mA, at room temperature. This result is a testament to the tremendous progress Cree has made this year,” said John Edmond, Cree co-founder and director of advanced optoelectronics. “As energy efficiency becomes increasingly important in addressing our nation’s energy challenges, Cree is doing its best to deliver the most energy-efficient LED technology possible.

Using the latest energy-efficient LED lighting technology

The new LED luminaires project more than 50 lumens per watt consumed, a relatively high light output considering the low amount of input energy. They contain the newest high-brightness led high bay light and employ Sunovia's patent-pending Aimed Optics(TM) technology to focus maximum light on the ground, virtually eliminating glare, wasted light and light pollution. Specialized cool color rendition allows for considerable visibility, and Camp Lejeune representatives noted that they are able to see colors of objects clearly in the LED light, which was much more difficult in the orange glow of the old metal halide fixtures.

According to CEE, the Position Paper provides manufacturers with the fundamentals on voluntary energy efficiency programs, including information about how they work and what types of incentives they typically use to promote efficient products and services. It also outlines the technical information that efficiency programs need from manufacturers in order to evaluate SSL product performance and consider it for potential inclusion in their promotional efforts. The Position Paper explains how manufacturers can partner with energy efficiency programs to promote quality, efficient SSL products, and as a result, improve sales of these products over time.

By using the approaches outlined in the Position Paper, energy efficiency programs have successfully increased sales and market penetration of traditional energy efficient lighting products, including fluorescent technologies like CFLs and T8 lamps. Program administrators look forward to working with SSL manufacturers to create the same positive outcome for that technology.

Launched on Nov. 30 at simultaneous press events in the Netherlands and South Africa, the system is available as a fully portable solution. Using the latest energy-efficient LED lighting technology, the system can illuminate areas up to 40x20m with bright white light. Advanced battery cells provide up to eight hours of floodlighting on a single solar charge – the equivalent of two or three full evening football matches or training sessions. The system is also highly sustainable, with a rugged design able to withstand the extreme rigors of life in some of the more challenging and remote terrains in the world.

the LEDs at a constant current

Last summer, the scientists field-tested 196 prototypes with the help of children who attended a Danish-run summer school in Zambia. The results showed that some of the lamps had problems due to excessive flexing and light quality degrading after 10 to 20 minutes, which the scientists are fixing by repositioning the solar cells and adding circuitry to deliver power to the LEDs at a constant current. The researchers plan to test improved versions of the lamps in Mali and Malawi.

This investment enables us to expand our presence in China and demonstrates our commitment to serving the growing demands of both our local and global LED customers,” said Chuck Swoboda, Cree chairman and CEO. “We are building on a solid foundation in Huizhou with a strong local management team and a history of manufacturing excellence. We look forward to continued success in China as we drive the led high bay light revolution.”

More than half of Cree’s employees work in China, mostly at the current Huizhou factory. Cree recognizes the support of Party Secretary YeBin Huang and Mayor RuQiu Li during the site selection process.

After being encapsulated in a second sheet of film

Residents have been asked by the city to give their opinion on PolyBrite’s Borealis LED street lighting by contacting the City of Naperville Public Works Department through January 2010. PolyBrite anticipates that continued savings projections will be achieved during this six-month demonstration.

Scientists at the Risø National Laboratory for Sustainable Energy in Denmark have developed an inexpensive way to integrate solar cells, LEDs, and ultrathin lithium batteries to create a lamp that can produce reading-quality light. The lamp's polymer solar cells and circuitry are printed onto large flexible plastic films, and the LEDs, flat batteries, and diodes are mounted using silver epoxy. After being encapsulated in a second sheet of film, the sheets are rolled up and snapped together at the corners with metal fasteners.

Large modules of organic photovoltaics, however, capture just 1 to 2 percent of the photon energy that hits them. But the scientist said even that measly return adds value in the price-sensitive context of rural lighting. In rural areas of Africa, Asia, and Latin America, the average household spends $40-$80 per year for kerosene lamps, and even the cheapest led high bay light devices on the market today cost about a year's worth of kerosene. The total cost of the Denmark scientists' solar-LED lamps is only about $27, and they think they can manufacture an improved version for about $10.

LED will finally enter the common lighting market in the next few years

LED TV is taking the world by storm and TV brand vendors are rolling out series of new models in the second half of the year, which fueled the decline of LED TV prices. Market outlook is fairly upbeat – total LED TV shipment for 2009 is estimated at 3.1 million units, and this figure is forecast to grow ten-fold to 30 million units in 2010.Samsung LED TV sales continue to skyrocket since its initial launch early 2009 – up to July 2009, its global sales hit a record 700 thousand units. LG followed suit and unveiled its LED TV in June, with sales forecast of 400 thousand units in the second half of this year, LG is poised to see exponential growth of 5 million units in 2010. LG is very optimistic about the LED TV market, and estimates that global LED TV market will reach 3.1 million units in 2009. According to industry research institute WitsView, the average price of 55-inch LED TV slid to $3,500, while the 47-inch models tumbled to $1,838. Despite a notable price gap between LED TVs and conventional LCD TVs, LED TV prices have fallen to an acceptable range, and the market is well-poised to witness explosive growth in 2009 and 2010.

As one of the first cities taking part in the LED lighting plan of 10,000 lights each in ten cities initiated by China Ministry of Science and Technology, Shanghai is gradually expanding LED energy-saving lights and signal lights. It is estimated that in Shanghai, LEDs will finally replace traditional lights in the next 3 to 5 years. There are huge potentials in Chinese LED lighting market. The potential market scale of common lightings exceeds 1 billion USD. Common lights are those lights used in offices, stores, hotels and families. Now LED lightings haven’t taken up many shares in this area. With the improvement of LED technologies and the reduction of costs, it is estimated that LED will finally enter the common lighting market in the next few years.

The common lighting area will become the largest market for LED and it is also the object for relevant dealers to fight for. To replace the current light tubes or light bulbs of common lightings, there are difficulties in costs and technologies for LED. The lighting efficiencies and brightness remain to be enhanced and costs are expected to reduce. Therefore, the LED penetration in the current lighting market is still low. The improvement of LED packaging technologies and material processing technologies will give breakthroughs to lighting efficiencies. Besides, the IC control can control the time and the brightness of LED illumination, which has enriched the original single lighting products and made them better than traditional lightings.

prevents heat deterioration of the emitter

The coated type production process of organic EL devices, compared with the deposition type, is attracting keen attention because it consists of a few layers formed by coating polymer without the use of vacuum, providing the opportunity for substantial cost reductions and for the production of large area-emission panels in the future.

The new structure has introduced a layer of dielectric/heat conductor that adjusts reflection of light. The new layer helps reduce the percentage of light trapped in the device, improving the light output. The dielectric/heat conductor layer, having high heat dissipation efficiency, prevents heat deterioration of the emitter, prolonging the device life.

SDK has already achieved a luminance half life of approximately 10,000 hours for white lighting through improvements in the phosphorescent-polymer materials.  The company will continue working with SRI International, a non-profit research organization based in California, U.S.A., and Itochu Plastics Inc. (CIPS), to improve the design of device structure and start selling samples on a full scale in 2010 for use in the general lighting market. The three parties will also work to improve coating property of the phosphorescent polymer and prolong the device life, aiming to achieve a 150 lm/W emissive efficiency and a luminance half life of approximately 50,000 hours for white lighting by 2015.

The core value of this project is the manufacturing of solid state lighting materials

The solid state lighting joint venture project between Hebei provincial government and China Electronics Technology Group Corporation’s No. 13 research institute has officially begun its production. This project is located in the Information Technology Center in Shinjiazhuang City, Hebei Province. The investment totaled RMB390 million, and covers an area of 60 acres, and is the largest industrialized solid state lighting project in Northern China. The project is to achieve an annual output of 100 thousand ultra-bright AllnGaP LED epi wafers, 20 thousand GaN LED epi wafer, five billion LED chips and a total of 300 million single-LED lights, standard LEDs, and high-power LEDs. The project is estimated to generate an annual output value of RMB 407 million.

The core value of this project is the manufacturing of solid state lighting materials and chips, which leverages packaging as its technical support, and champions its applications to spur the development of materials, packaging, and chips, and commissions the testing and standardizing platforms of No. 13 institute. The project aimed at making a leap of innovation, accelerating technological progress, and establishing the solid state lighting industry chain in Hebei Province.

CEO Stephen Squires explained that there are essential similarities between the screen-printing techniques to fabricate LEDs and the screen printing technology that Solterra is currently optimizing to print quantum dots to make thin-film solar cells.

Using this licensing agreement to fabricate LEDs using screen printing techniques will greatly reduce the costs of LEDs, Squires explained. The high cost of producing LEDs has limited its uses; and therefore a dramatic cost reduction will greatly expand LED use, he added.

It's important to save energy for the sake of cost and the environment

Since the first light bulb was invented in the 1800’s new lamp technology has evolved. When the fluorescent tube was invented in 1929, sales of traditional light bulbs plummeted, and then in the 1970’s along came the compact fluorescent, since then new variations have evolved, sales of the former types have virtually disappeared, but the fundamental lamp design has remained unchanged, using a heating element to ignite gases and produce light. The use of a heating element results in energy being wasted as heat as opposed to generating light.

As LEDs do not rely on the use of a heating element, then energy is not wasted. The T8 LED tubes from Neo Neon offer a lumen efficiency in excess of 70 Lumens per watt.

The 600mm T8 LED tube draws just 13 watts compared to the typical 21 watts drawn by a fluorescent tube of the same size. The 1200mm version draws only 26 watts compared to the 42 watts of associated size of fluorescent tube.

It's important to save energy for the sake of cost and the environment, and by simply changing the tubes in existing fittings the new T8 LED tubes from Neo Neon can cut nearly 40% off the energy consumption of a typical office lighting installation.

Unlike fluorescent lamps, the T8 LED Tubes from Neo Neon provide 100% light output within milliseconds of switching on the power, making them perfect for connection a PIR sensor and therefore saving even more energy.

Combining these massive energy saving characteristics with the operational life of over 50,000 hours, which will virtually eliminate maintenance costs, the new T8 LED Tubes from Neo Neon will save you money from the day of installation and for years to come.

the patented packaging technologies are chosen to optimize light

Seeking out opportunities to reduce energy consumption is just one way AT&T is working to tackle environmental issues. AT&T recently announced plans to invest up to $565 million as part of a long-term strategy to deploy more than 15,000 alternative-fuel vehicles over the next 10 years. AT&T also has begun to use alternative energy sources such as wind and solar power.a solid-state lighting company specializing in high performance LED products, introduces an ultra-bright, ultra-compact 40W LED light source available in warm, neutral and daylight white color temperatures. It is the first of its kind with record luminous flux density in a compact 9mm x 9mm footprint. The multi-chip LED is capable of 2000+ lumens in neutral and daylight white color temperatures and 1500+ lumens in warm white.

This industry-leading LED is an excellent source for general lighting, down lighting, architectural and street lighting applications. The unparalleled thermal resistance of 0.7° C/W allows the extreme power density from such a small light source to create a compact and efficient optical system. LedEngin 40W LED light source exceeds the luminance of competing LED solutions by 6-10 times solving a major challenge of working with larger LED sources in flood and spot lighting applications. The high quality materials and the patented packaging technologies are chosen to optimize light output and minimize stresses resulting in superior reliability, color point stability and lumen maintenance well beyond industry standards. The real importance is that we can actually offer our customers

These heat sinks, which are offered with different diameters and contours, are available in different sections of different lengths to suit specific heat dissipation applications. The LEDs are fastened onto the heat sink using thermally conductive, double sided adhesive tape, 2-component thermally conductive adhesive or screws. In the standard version, the surface is black anodised or of natural colour.

‘LEDs are a fascinating new technology,’ said Michael P. Simonis, president, Unilux, ‘but they are not for every printing or labeling application. Their softer light makes them best suited for inspecting labels and packaging with highly reflective coatings, foils or metalized substrates or on high-speed lines. Pulsed LED lights can replace strobe lights with Xenon lamps, where inspectors sometimes need to dial down the intensity or use frosted glass to avoid harsh reflections. When combining the light with our unique reflector designs, Unilux can provide even illumination across the entire surface.’The Unilux LED family of inspection lights carries a higher initial cost than the strobe lights with Xenon lamps, but the LED lamps do not have the same replacement costs.

‘The selection of pulsed LED or stroboscopic inspection lighting really comes down to the application,’ Simonis said. ‘The pulsed LED is better for high-speed, highly reflective printing, and the strobe for most other printing applications. LEDs can have a better light output than Xenon lamps when you have a flash rate greater than 15,000 flashes per second. The costs are about the same over a 3-5 year operating period, with the cost savings on the LED units being better after that. The real importance is that we can actually offer our customers the best lighting solution to meet their exact needs. It is not about developing an LED light or a Xenon lamp; it’s about being able to guide the customer to which light is best for them and to help produce the best final product. Only Unilux can do both.’

It is the icing on the cake on this design

Willie Williams, U2 show designer, says “Video is the most powerful tool you can have on stage. But now that video is so ubiquitous in rock stage setting, we needed a very extreme change of canvas to be heard. The transformable LED gave us the chance to create a transparent 360° moving video element, unprecedented in this industry. It is the icing on the cake on this design.”

“It is thrilling to see the work I have been doing with transformable structures expressed in such a whole new way,” Chuck Hoberman adds. “The screen is like a living thing, it continuously changes shapes and forms and the video acts like live skin on it. It is one of the most fascinating objects in the world now.”

“We wanted to create something that was bigger than a conventional stage. This tour was big enough to make a purpose built structure,” says Mark Fisher, U2 stage designer. I wanted to create a transparent stage and really needed a video screen that would fit in that environment, a round screen that would not block the view for the audience. Barco's FLX gave us the chance to create this. We were happy to be working with Barco again; they have helped very well in the past and delivered an extraordinary product for this show.”

Frederic Opsomer, Vice President of Barco's Innovative Designs, adds “There have been many evolutions in the LED video market for concert touring, from a fixed IMAG screen to moving screens to transformable screens now. This is the fifth time I have been working with U2 and it is again a big honor to be part of it. The entertainment business is constantly asking for new and innovating products, even in these difficult times and the U2 360° tour is a perfect example of this.

will mainly be used in general lighting applications

Founded in 2005, Lagotek Corporation develops residential and commercial building automation systems based upon patent pending, and company-owned intellectual property. Applications for this technology include audio, climate control, security systems, intercom systems, lighting, video monitoring, window coverings, IR control, and irrigation systems. In addition to manufacturing LED StandAlone and controlLED (dimmable) lighting products to replace fluorescent lamps, Advanced Control Technologies, Inc. (ACT) designs and manufactures powerline carrier products to control lighting and other electrical loads which include programmable transmitters, coupler/amplifiers (for multiple phase power) and receivers. ACT also designs and manufactures a family of Z-Wave home and office automation products that use radio frequency signals to control lighting and other electrical loads.

With the fast growth in LED outdoor displays and backlights, DisplaySearch forecasts that display LEDs, including 24 billion for active outdoor display and 34 billion for LCD backlights, will have a 34.7% share of the global 167 billion unit LED market in 2012, making display LEDs the largest market segment. Low-current LEDs will be the mainstream type used in large-area LCD backlights, due to cost, thermal management and luminance efficiency requirements. High-power LEDs, with a driving current higher than 350 mA (more than 1W), are not well-suited for LCD backlights due to thermal issues, and will mainly be used in general lighting applications that require high brightness.

The penetration rate of LED backlights in notebook PCs will reach 52% in 2009, and DisplaySearch forecasts penetration will grow rapidly to 81% in 2010. In LCD TV, the penetration rate will ramp up from 3% with 3.6 million units in 2009 to 10% with 15 million units in 2010. Leading LCD TV brands including Samsung, Philips, Sharp, Sony, Toshiba, Vizio and LG are planning increased use of LED backlights starting in the second half of 2009. A driving factor is the change in LED backlight structure from direct to edge light type, which reduces the cost premium over CCFL backlights. Finally, LED backlights in desktop monitors are expected to reach 31 million units in 2012.

the product in the fourth quarter of this year

Optimistic about industrial prosperity in the second half of this year through next year, Yeh stressed that demand from notebook PC, TV and lighting sectors has infused strong growth momentum into the LED industry. Increasing popularity of LED-backlit LCD (liquid crystal display) TVs will also serve as major driving force, he added. At the show, Everlight unveiled its newest AC LED, which can work without transformers and last for 50,000 hours. The company is scheduled to start shipping the product in the fourth quarter of this year.

The company had raised $10.5 million in March in its first round of funding, and is expecting an additional $20 million early in the summer, according to CEO Matt Thomas. The product is expected to reach full production in September. The company hasn’t disclosed details of its technology. But it essentially uses optics with a different shape that more efficiently extracts light out of the chip, Thomas said. “We think of [it] as an optical light-emitting device, as opposed to a semiconductor process that happens to create light,” he said. “We truly have some breakthrough physics. The chip structure extracts more lumens and reduces the internal refraction, delivering more watts in a smaller package, using conventional manufacturing methods, the company claims. Illumitex has reached more than 100 lumens per watt already, expects to reach 150 lumens per watt by the end of the year — which would make the lights 50 percent more efficient than other LEDs — and wants to hit 250 lumens per watt by the end of next year, Thomas says. That last goal would put it 15 years ahead of a U.S. Department of Energy target of the technology reaching 160 lumens per watt by 2025.

Illumitex’s LEDs also produce more uniform light than other LEDs, according to the company. And the light all comes out of the top of the device in one direction, which means the lights don’t need reflectors. This simplicity makes the lighting package smaller, a plus for manufacturers looking to make thinner devices. Additionally, as Illumitex delivers three times the usable light, manufacturers also can use fewer LEDs, making the footprint smaller still. Altogether, the LEDs get 10 times the light out of the same sized package, said the company.
