lighting solutions that are transforming not only the application of lighting

It’s fitting that this time capsule was meant to be unearthed when significant changes in the incandescent light bulb occurred,” commented GE Lighting’s President & CEO Maryrose Sylvester. “We’re celebrating innovation at a time when GE scientists and engineers at Nela Park and around the world are developing advanced lighting solutions that are transforming not only the application of lighting, but also the business of lighting.”

GE’s energy-efficient lighting solutions are enabling millions of dollars in energy and maintenance cost savings for some of the world’s biggest and best-known brands, and municipality roadway projects of every size.

When GE customers such as Marriott, Walmart and cities big and small—from Sydney, Australia to Stamford, Connecticut—can save money with energy-efficient lighting that costs less to operate and lasts as long as a decade,” adds Sylvester, “they can put the savings toward new or expanded growth initiatives. We’ve always been a company that offers solutions that make the world work better. Just ask our customers.”

In April 2013, the company will bring Nela Park employees together for a ceremonial burying of a new time capsule, which is expected to include a GE Energy Smart? 60-watt LED bulb that lasts over 22 years when operated 3 hours a day, new more informative consumer light bulb packaging debuting in 2012, marketing materials and an employee photo.

the rising demand for energy-saving products in the mainland

Furthermore, Yeh pointed out Taiwan began the development of the led high bay light industry earlier than mainland China, and Taiwan has already set up solid foundation for the industry’s supply chain, technological development, product design and management.

In his opinion, the development can create an industry synergy relation between Taiwan and the mainland based on the rising demand for energy-saving products in the mainland, which is said to be the world’s biggest market for LED lighting.

Sylvester was pleased to receive the award and said that, "We're proud that GE Lighting has more than 500 ENERGY STAR(R)-qualified products which provide increased energy efficiency for our customers. Being recognized for sustained excellence shows the value of listening to customers, and points to our ability to swiftly put innovations born in GE labs into the hands of customers."

Under the agreement, Fikra will provide its customers and local market with a variety of advanced systems and products of a leading led linear high bay light system brand such as Cooper that is used in a range of prestigious construction projects.

the show has gained recognition with LED manufacturers

While lighting LEDs have grown in efficiency they have faced challenges in color quality and thermal management in small form-factors. Intematix phosphors enable white led high bay light comparable to conventional sources and ChromaLit remote phosphor systems have shown more efficient cooling leading to compact light bulb solutions.

According to Walter Yeh, executive vice president of the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), one of the organizers of the show, this year, the show has gained recognition with LED manufacturers, evidenced by the rise in the number of participating companies.

A record 321 lighting equipment manufacturers are manning 782 booths at the show, up from 634 booths last year and 404 booths in 2010.  At the invitation of TAITRA, 1,200 buyers from 70 countries are expected to attend.

Additionally, the show also features the conjunction of the annual meetings of the Global Lighting Association and the International Commission on Illumination-Taiwan, in which attendees will explore the future trends of the led linear high bay light industry and push for the alignment of local specifications with international ones.

revenues attributed to LEDs for each display screen are dropping rapidly

According to the new report "LEDs: The 2011 Market Review," in 2011, the market volume for high brightness LEDs (HB-LEDs) reached $12 billion, a 4.3% growth over 2010. Although the demand for led high bay light (back light unit) systems is still growing, the demand for LED chips is falling.

Fewer LEDs are needed to realise a BLU and with the cost per LED also dropping, revenues attributed to LEDs for each display screen are dropping rapidly.

The production of BLU based on LEDs should continue to rise through 2014. The demand for LEDs to produce edge-lit BLU has peaked and will settle at about 70% of its maximum value in 2010-2011.

The European Photonics Industry Consortium has utilized the EPIC Bellwether Index of key companies to indicate the commercial development of solid-state lighting in general.  And the Bellwether companies showed rather different levels of performance in 2011. For example, lighting systems companies like Philips and Zumtobel developed well, while chip manufacturers like Epistar and Cree showed mixed results. Scale-back of led linear high bay light purchases due to slowing demand in the back lighting market, and the end of purchase subsidies by the Chinese government have  an important influence on Aixtron.

limit how often workers need to tend to the lights

Buzo praised the results: “It’s great lighting. It kind of surrounds you, kind of engulfs you, and it gives you a clear picture of led high bay light what you’re working around as far as your surroundings.”

The light fixtures are rated to last seven to 10 years, operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, Metz said. Their staying power should reduce operating costs and limit how often workers need to tend to the lights, which are 45 feet above the production floor.

The quality of the light is also an improvement, Metz said. “The color rendering of these lights makes it a safer work environment by providing truer colors to the workers’ eyes, as well as allowing workers to differentiate between colors easier,” he said.

Currently, the Middle East and Africa have faced most pressure in manage water supplies due to water shortages. And PlantLab has invented a way to grow plants under LED lights indoors, with all the water recycled within the indoor environment for reuse to solve the problem.

According to the company, plants are not that dependent on using the sun for photosynthesis. And they certainly don’t mind being separated from their pests. And they are fine with 90 percent less water, if they get it over and over again.

They use led linear high bay light to grow the plants and water them with a slow trickle that drains through the soil and is collected and reused. Computers capture over 160,000 reports per second to determine the exact amount, cycle, and color spectrum of light that’s optimal for the plant, as well as water, so that no resource is wasted and the plant is neither undernourished nor overexposed.

the development of standard specifications for the interfaces of LED light engines

According to Cree, compared with current lighting, the new installations will offer an energy saving between 45 per cent and 76 per cent, depending on the individual requirements of each Embassy.“Embassies are a great vehicle to showcase US innovation and influence global commercial led high bay light and industrial organizations to take action, consume less energy and advance energy efficiency.” Said by Greg Merritt, VP of coprorate marketing at Cree.

The League of Green Embassies was established in 2007 to reduce greenhouse emissions and showcase US technology as well as increase US exports. This new testing service offering will be available separately or as a bundle with other UL lighting industry services such as Energy Star, performance testing and safety certification.

Zhaga is an industry-wide cooperation aimed at the development of standard specifications for the interfaces of led linear high bay light engines. The organization creates interface specifications for 'light engines' with the goal to promote interchangeability of light engines made by different manufacturers; different lighting applications need different light engines.

which is the target of this legislation is more complicated to retrofit

It seems that government is focused on tackling the most powerful light sources rather than those that have viable or available alternatives. A 150W incandescent bulb is much more complicated to replace than a 40W bulb for example but government chose to phase out the higher power product led high bay light. With halogens, the GU10 equivalent may have been more a more sensible target, as these are prone to failure and can be easily switched out, the MR16 which is the target of this legislation is more complicated to retrofit.

There are two alternatives to the 12 V, 50 W, halogen MR16; compact fluorescents (CFLs) and LEDs. CFLs operate at between 12-14 W but as well as the issues around mercury release, also require the replacement of existing fittings due to their greater overall size. In contrast, LEDs can be directly retrofit into a halogen fitting and operate at a low 7W. LEDs also offer a considerable extended lifetime of up to 30,000 hours operation, compared to around 9,000 hours for CFLs or 2,500 for halogens.

The fact is, however, that LEDs are more expensive as an initial purchase. It would be a mistake to try to produce LED lamps that are at a similar price point to halogens because the two technologies represent fundamentally different approaches to lighting. Price matching LED lamps would only result in poor quality light output and premature failure, which in turn would mean low-levels of customer satisfaction and acceptance. Education is needed around these differences to avoid simple point-of-purchase price based decisions.

Yes, top end LEDs can now replace halogens, but are replaceable lamps really the way forward? Proper communication and education is needed around the overall value of product lifetime and reliability and this led linear high bay light requires a fundamental shift in thinking. It’s time to stop moving from one bulb to another in a drive to be more sustainable. We need to stand back and fundamentally re-think the way we light our buildings.
